This is where a victim is contacted from a scammer pretending to be their grandchild. The scammer tries to convince the victim to send money for some fictitious financial problem and may request gift cards or cash. The scammers may sometimes use personal information which is on social networking sites or on the internet to make themselves seem more real to the victim.
There have been incidents where the scammers purport themselves as law enforcement and tell the victim their grandchild was in an accident where drugs were found in the car or someone died and money is needed for bond or an attorney. Law Enforcement WILL NOT contact families requesting money for bond or an attorney for their family members.
