Adult Court Services

DHHS staff who provide court services for adults assess the need for commitments, guardianships, and protective placements, and make referrals as needed.

If it is determined that a legal action should occur, DHHS staff petition the court, coordinate the hearings, and monitor the legal needs of the subject of the action.

DHHS carries out periodic reviews of a subject's legal status as required by law.

While a court can order that certain services be provided to a subject, decision-making authority is usually given to DHHS or a guardian. Training and support for guardians are provided by DHHS staff.
